ISO Standards Updates
Monitor newly published ISO editions, amendments and standards under development. This reference library connects official publication records with clear operational implications, evidence requirements and edition transition planning.
Start with the publication status. A released edition, a draft revision and an amendment require different decisions. Confirm the applicable standard, its scope and your certification body's transition arrangements before changing controlled management system documents.
Distinguish published standards, draft revisions and amendments.
Compare affected controls, ownership, training and audit evidence.
Plan actions with responsible owners and measurable completion criteria.

Understand the Type of ISO Update
The type of publication determines whether you need a formal transition project, an amendment assessment or simply a development watch. ISO publication and accredited certification timelines are separate matters.
New or Revised Edition
A published edition establishes the new reference text. Confirm whether it replaces an earlier edition and assess differences against the organization’s applicable requirements.
Evidence: Edition register, requirements comparison and approved transition plan.
Amendment
An amendment changes specified content of an existing edition. Read the underlying document and amendment together rather than describing the change as a complete replacement.
Evidence: Applicability review, updated context/control records and change approval.
Draft / DIS
A working or enquiry stage draft can still change. Use it for horizon scanning and preliminary gap assessment, not as an automatically effective replacement for the published edition.
Evidence: Monitoring log, risk assumptions and a review trigger at publication.
Certification transition: Verify sector specific scheme rules and the applicable accreditation or certification body notices. A publication date alone does not establish the organization’s certificate transition deadline.
Latest ISO Standards Updates
Use search, category filters and status to browse the reference library. Publication data are not a live feed; entries and official links should be rechecked before decisions are taken. The table includes historical standards used as supporting references as well as recent updates.

Seven Steps to Manage an ISO Edition Transition
Treat a revised ISO publication as a controlled change programme, not a file replacement exercise. The depth and sequence below should reflect the standard, management system scope and certification scheme.
01. Validate the published reference
Check ISO number, full title, edition and publication status against the official catalogue. Confirm whether the text is a new edition, amendment or draft.
Evidence / deliverable: Verified standards register and implementation decision.
02. Establish transition governance
Appoint an executive sponsor, programme owner and functional process owners. Determine relevant sites, outsourcing interfaces, financial and competence resources.
Evidence / deliverable: Approved scope, RACI and milestone plan.
03. Map old to new requirements
Compare licensed source editions by applicable topic or clause. Distinguish newly required controls from wording changes and unchanged requirements.
Evidence / deliverable: Controlled change matrix with evidence references.
04. Prioritize organizational impacts
Check operational risks, statutory obligations, supplier arrangements, systems, performance measures and employee roles.
Evidence / deliverable: Prioritized gap and impact register, including justification for no change decisions.
05. Implement approved changes
Revise policies and procedures only where needed; deploy operational controls and training with accountable owners. Preserve previous document revisions and records of approval.
Evidence / deliverable: Released documents, training evidence and functioning controls.
06. Verify effectiveness internally
Sample actual transactions, test revised controls, evaluate competence, record nonconformities and verify corrective action closure. Escalate findings to management review.
Evidence / deliverable: Audit results, effectiveness checks and management decisions.
07. Coordinate external transition
Confirm accredited audit scheduling, required evidence, audit duration and deadlines directly with your certification body. Close applicable findings and retain the independent certification decision.
Evidence / deliverable: Agreed audit plan and transition confirmation.
Edition Comparison & Transition Priorities
Selected 2025 to 2026 publications illustrate different update routes. These are practical starting points, not exhaustive clause by clause comparisons. Consult official source editions before defining conformity criteria.
| ISO Reference | Transition Focus & Objective Evidence | Publication Status | Official Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISO 9001 | Review leadership, quality culture, risks and opportunities, competence, processes and quality performance monitoring. Compare relevant documented information and completed audit trails. Existing ISO 9001:2015 certificates: Transition by 30 Sep 2029 under published ISO committee guidance; verify with the certification body. | 2015 → 2026 published | ISO committee ↗ |
| ISO 14001 | Review environmental aspects, applicable obligations, lifecycle controls, climate related context, objectives and performance evidence. Recheck significant impacts and management oversight. | 2015 → 2026 published | ISO catalogue ↗ |
| ISO 9000 | Confirm updated quality terminology, policy wording and training definitions. ISO 9000 provides fundamentals and vocabulary; it is not itself a standalone certifiable quality management system requirements standard. | 2015 → 2026 published | ISO catalogue ↗ |
| ISO 19011 | Review audit programme planning, risk based audit approaches, competence criteria, interviewing, findings and reporting templates. This is audit guidance, not a certification scheme by itself. | 2018 → 2026 published | ISO catalogue ↗ |
| ISO/IEC 27701 | Evaluate the independently structured PIMS requirements, privacy governance and responsibilities for PII controllers and processors. Check control mapping, privacy assessments and records. | 2019 → 2025 published | ISO catalogue ↗ |
| ISO 45001 | Keep ISO 45001:2018 and its applicable amendment as the published baseline while monitoring the draft. Record provisional impact assumptions without treating draft wording as final. | 2018 → DIS under development | ISO draft ↗ |
| ISO 22002-100 | Review shared PRP requirements across food, feed and packaging operations alongside applicable sector specific ISO 22002 parts. Check sanitation, infrastructure, hygiene and inspection evidence. | 2025 first edition | ISO catalogue ↗ |
| ISO 20001 | Establish food loss and waste baselines, hotspot analysis, measurement, responsibilities and continual improvement controls for applicable food chain activities. | 2026 first edition | ISO catalogue ↗ |
Decision rule: An ISO publication and a certification transition deadline are not interchangeable. Always confirm applicable accreditation, sector scheme and certification body arrangements before announcing transition completion.
What to Include in an ISO Transition Control Register
A good transition register makes every significant edition change traceable from a published requirement to an owner, a revised control and evidence of operation. Use the register as an active project management tool, not just a clause comparison.
Reference and applicability
Published ISO reference, edition, affected requirement/topic, applicable site or process, and justification when not applicable.
Existing operation
Current policy, process, system, risk assessment, supplier interface and dated evidence already available.
Gap / decision
New requirement or clarification, observed difference, risk significance and change/no change rationale.
Ownership and due dates
Sponsor, process owner, accountable approver, target implementation date and dependencies.
Implementation evidence
Controlled revisions, rollout records, role based training, operational logs and monitoring outcomes.
Verification and closure
Sampling method, internal audit reference, finding resolution, management review decision and certification body confirmation where relevant.
Suggested working status: Not Assessed → Impact Assessed → Action In Progress → Implemented → Effectiveness Verified → Closed. Preserve evidence links and reviewer approval at each status change.
Practical Examples: From ISO Updates to Working Controls
Real transition work is best demonstrated by a representative process and a retrievable trail of decisions, controls and operating results.

Quality Management: ISO 9001
Impact check: Review how leadership commitments and risk based process decisions are implemented, measured and explained.
Audit trail: Customer Requirement → Process Ownership → Production/Service Control → Performance Result → Corrective Action.

Environmental Management: ISO 14001
Impact check: Re evaluate significant aspects, environmental objectives and climate related context based on applicable obligations.
Audit trail: Activity/Aspect → Significance Decision → Operational Control → Environmental Measurement → Management Review.

Privacy Management: ISO/IEC 27701
Impact check: Reassess controller and processor roles, data handling and privacy governance for the published standalone PIMS requirements.
Audit trail: PII Activity → Purpose And Obligations → Authorized Controls → Monitoring → Incident Or Request Resolution.
